The Perfect Portugal Bodyboarding Trip Team Rider Laurie McCall Tells All

Bodyboard-Depot Team rider Laurie McCall hit Portugal at the end of last summer to score some waves and to check out a few spots for us in preparation for our bodyboard coaching trip to the Sintra area on September 2. He scored! peniche4 - lauraConsolação Why did you choose to hit Portugal last year for a bodyboard trip? I know a lot of people who have been on trips there before and they all recommended it to me. I'd heard it was cheap, the weather was good and it was full good set-ups, so it had to be done! What time of the year did you head over and why? We went in the last week of October in the hope that the Autumn swells would be in full effect, needless to say they were! Accommodation was also much cheaper at that time of year so it was a no-brainer. Who was on the trip? I went with my girlfriend Laura, she'd been before and really enjoyed it. nazare - laura How did you get there and how much did it cost? How long was the flight? We flew from Bristol Airport to Lisbon. Because the flight wasn't booked too far in advance it wasn't that cheap, but the money and time we saved not having to travel from Cornwall to an airport in London made it worth it. The flight was pretty smooth and didn't take long (2 hours), Portugal is surprisingly close! Which spots did you surf and check? We were staying 5 minutes south of Peniche so were close to Supertubos which I surfed a few times. On the first day I scored it with just one other guy out, the wind was a bit cross-shore but the swell was pulsing through. I managed to find a few tubes amongst some hellish close-outs and clean up sets! My leash was straight after that surf! I surfed there again on a slightly smaller day, the place definitely lives up to its name, the crowd was heavy though, decent waves were more difficult to find amoungst the local crowd. On another day we found a little reef break to the left of a small town called Consolação, a bit further south of Peniche. When I first checked it it appeared to be a fat right hand point break populated by SUPs and beginners, but as the tide dropped a hollow left-hander appeared which I surfed to myself for a few hours! I got to surf Nazaré which is a really good wave to bodyboard, I also saw the tow surfers ride it at a ridiculous size. That was pretty incredible to see! The whole week I was in Portugal the swell was solid so I got pretty lucky! I will definitely be going back. One that got away.[/caption] What was the bodyboard scene like down there? It seemed pretty alive with a lot of guys ripping. I think because of the size of the swell the crowds were quite dispersed across different beach. It looks like it would be a great place to grow up as a bodyboarder. What were the highlights of the trip? I think witnessing 30+ foot waves at Nazaré was pretty amazing. I'd go back again, even if it was just to see that. The whole trip was good though, I managed to get in the water, eat some good food, spend time with Laura and visit Lisbon which was cool. Another highlight was Laura's willingness to take photos while I was in the water, no complaints there! Reefs, beaches, points, it seems to have it all! You were shooting quite a lot of shots while you were down there, which was your favourite shot of the trip? One of my photos from a big day at Nazaré I'm pretty stoked with. Just a gigantic, perfect wedge unloading onto the beach with some weird gloomy lighting, respect to anyone who paddles out there when its big, its a pretty intimidating wave.
